Pet Ownership
and Health
"Pet ownership can decrease
blood pressure, cholesterol levels, triglyceride levels,
and feelings of loneliness," notes the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention. Pets can also aid
in increasing exercise, outdoor activities, and socialization
in their owners. A study done at the University of Missouri-Columbia
matched new walkers with loaner dogs and found the walkers
lost an average of 14 pounds in a year.
At a recent
Active for Life® reunion event hosted by
the Council on Aging of Southwestern Ohio and Hamilton
County Health District, two pet adoption organizations
offered AFL alumni the opportunity to interact with
some furry friends and learn about pet adoption. Circle
Tail (http://www.circletail.org/)
provides assistance dogs to people with mobility, hearing,
neurologic or psychiatric disabilities, as well as dogs
for adoption. PAWS (http://www.pawsadoptioncenter.org/)
is a no-kill, non-profit animal shelter dedicated to
providing care and shelter for unwanted dogs and cats
and placing them in loving homes.
To learn about opportunities
to connect older adults in your community with pets
contact your local SPCA or community pet shelters and
adoption agencies.
